A
Amours célèbres (1961)
aka Amours célèbres (1961) France aka Famous Love Affairs (International: English title)
Credits: Directed by: Michel Boisrond. Writing credits: Marcel Achard (dialogue) + Michel Audiard (dialogue). Cast: Philippe Noiret as Louis XIV (segment "Lauzun") + Jean-Paul Belmondo as Lauzun (segment "Lauzun)  + Dany Robin as Mme de Monaco (segment "Lauzun")  + Palau as Saint-Simon (segment "Lauzun") (as Pierre Palau)  + Liliane Brousse as Mme de Montespan (segment "Lauzun")  + Guy Tréjan as Le gouverneur (segment "Lauzun")  + Agnès Laurent as La femme du gouverneur (segment "Lauzun")  + Michel Galabru as Champagne (segment "Lauzun")  + Maurice Varny as Saint-Aignan (segment "Lauzun")  + Simone Signoret as Jenny (segment "Jenny de Lacour")  + Pierre Vaneck as René de La Roche (segment "Jenny de Lacour")  + Colette Castel as La femme de chambre (segment "Jenny de Lacour")  + François Maistre as Commissaire Massot (segment "Jenny de Lacour")  + Antoine Bourseiller as Nathali Gaudry (segment "Jenny de Lacour")  + Alain Delon as Prince Albert/Le duc Albert (segment "Agnès Bernauer")
Synopsis: Outside the first sketch, featuring Lauzun,Mesdames de Monaco,Montespan and La Vallière,and the Sun King in the flesh, these love affairs, notwithstanding the title ,are not that much famous, even for the European audience. This is a rather mediocre program, which boasts a lot of French stars but which does not deliver the goods.
The first one takes us in Versailles ,at the time of Louis XIV,the Sun King.As for the footnotes in history are concerned, you'll always be better off with Sacha Guitry's "si Versailles m'était conté" or "si Paris m'était conté".This sinister amorous anecdote wastes both Jean-Paul Belmondo(Lauzun) and Philippe Noiret (His Majesty). This is the only one which justify the title, though.
The second one is the story of Jenny Lacour ,a courtesan from the end of the nineteenth century who throws acid at her unfaithful lover. Two good actors -Simone Signoret and Pierre Vaneck-cannot save the rather tepid directing. It looks like a poor man's Guy de Maupassant.
The third one is the most entertaining if by no means enthralling:the action takes place in Bayern in the Middle Ages where a maiden (Brigitte Bardot!!!) seduces a prince (Alain Delon). But it's not Cinderella all over again because the young man's wicked father is watchful, and the story will tragically end.Brigitte Bardot is miscast as the lead but nowadays,it's for her that most of the people will see the whole movie. There's a good supporting cast, with Suzanne Flon playing some kind of Godmother -but without a magic wand-,and Jean-Claude Brialy as an invert, the only unusual thing in a routine story.
The fourth one takes us to Napoleon's reign.Rivalry between two thespians (Edwige Feuillère and Annie Girardot)in Talma theater. The movie made up of sketches is,in France, Julien Duvivier's field.Boisrond is no match for him and his movie can easily be dismissed. Author: dbdumonteil
Four sketches of historical occourances in France featuring some of the greatest stars in French cinema. From the Court of the Sun King to sorcery in the Middle Ages, this colorful carousel illustrates the history of France. Based on the comic strip from "France Soir".

It is 1625, the city of Casale has been lain to siege by the governor of Milan, Don Gonzale of Cordova. It is, however, the grasping and obsequious vice-governor who is terrorising the population, trying to worm his way into the favour of the Spanish forces. Diana, however, is spared his tyranny; her noble blood and considerable inheritance make her an ideal marriage proposition for the vice-governor, who solicits the help of her sister, Elisabetta, to engineer the marriage. However, Diana is fated to love another, the soldier Marco. He attacks the vice-governor, but in the violent clash that follows his beloved Diana is mortally wounded. Stricken with grief and anger, Marco sets his heart on revenge, and after many actionpacked scenes he finally runs the vice-governor to ground and kills him. The film ends most happily with Marco's wedding to Maria Dolores, a young girl who reminds him of Diana.

They're back... all for one and one for all! / It's 1649: Mazarin hires the impoverished D'Artagnan to find the other musketeers: Cromwell has overthrown the English king, so Mazarin fears revolt, particularly from the popular Beaufort. Porthos, bored with riches and wanting a title, signs on, but Aramis, an abbé, and Athos, a brawler raising an intellectual son, assist Beaufort in secret. When they fail to halt Beaufort's escape from prison, the musketeers are expendable, and Mazarin sends them to London to rescue Charles I. They are also pursued by Justine, the avenging daughter of Milady de Winter, their enemy 20 years ago. They must escape England, avoid Justine, serve the Queen, and secure Beauford's political reforms.

Synopsis: D'Artagnan is on his way to join the musketeers, only to find out to his disappointment that their life is more a life of debauchery than one of heroic deeds. That is the idea underlying this film, and as far as ideas for sex films go it is a fairly good one. Sadly, this is just about the only 'fairly good' thing about this movie.

Trois mousquetaires, Les (1953)
aka Trois mousquetaires, Les (1953) aka Fate largo ai moschettieri! (1953) (Italy) aka Three Musketeers, The (1953/I) (USA)
Credits: Directed by André Hunebelle / Louis Arbessier + Steve Barclay + Bourvil + Gino Cervi + Georges Chamarat + Jacques François + Danielle Godet + Georges Marchal + Jean Martinelli + Renaud Mary + Félix Oudart + Jean Parédès + Françoise Prévost + Marie Sabouret + Yvonne Sanson + Jean-Marc Tennberg
Synopsis: But worth seeing if you are a Dumas fan. The only version I've seen where Planchet plays a more important role than D'Artagnan. French star Bourvil probably forced the director to expand the nothing part into something more significant. That aside, if you speak and understand french you will find this a rewarding version of the Dumas classic. Its main qualities are a masterful use of language in the service of wit and above all, the expression of D'Artagnan's Gascon pride.
Best scene: D'Artagnan jealously follows Constance on her covert mission to meet Buckingham and bring him to meet the queen, thinking she has gone to meet another lover. Upon finding out the secret he throws himself to his knees at the englishman's feet and offers his life- No other version comes close to showing D'Artagnan's reckless nobility...by André-7

The original 1940s version of this film, starring Margaret Lockwood is a really enjoyable campfest. This dire remake is one of the worst films I have had the misfortune to see! Being a fan of the original, I was curious to catch this version which was broadcast on satellite last night (I had not seen it previously). Viewers are expected to believe that the grandfatherly Denholm Elliot would be the object of love/lust for a beautiful young Glynis Barber and then a (totally charmless) Faye Dunaway. At times, the poor old lad has trouble getting around the set let alone keeping two women happy. Faye Dunaway is meant to be Ms. Barber's 'friend' whilst actually looking like her mother. Ms. Dunaway (even then an old broiler with the head stuck out of an aeroplane window pulled-back face look) is lusted after by Alan Bates and Oliver Tobias. The whole premise is ludicrous. Hopelessly miscast, badly acted and directed the film is a total mess and one views it with the horrible fascination of a car crash! Whether or not it is meant to be tongue in cheek I don't know, but it certainly caused a few laughs! I'm afraid that Michael Winner's crime against cinema is far worse than Captain Jerry's highway robbery so in my view it should be MW swinging from the gibbet at Tyburn!!!

Her next exploit is to recover gambling losses by donning mask and cloak and taking to the roads as a highwayman! The thrill of these ventures proves addictive...especially when she meets a male highwayman who becomes her lover. Together, the two desperados lead a gay secret life, pursued by the local magistrate Sir Ralph Skelton...Barbara's husband! To what further crimes will the wicked Lady Skelton descend?
