Synopsis:
A follow up to the WALKING WITH DINOSAURS documentary, featuring the
amazing computer animation that made its predecessor so popular. With
a focus on the Allosaurus, the fearsome flesh-eating thunder lizard
similar to the Tyrannosaurus Rex, this special explores the 12-meter
monster that terrorized the late Jurassic Period. Equipped with huge
serrated teeth designed for ripping the flesh from the bone, no more
terrifying predator was seen in the dinosaur world until the advent of
the T. Rex, some 75 million years later. Made in association with the
BBC and The Discovery Channel. |

#1: Galaxy of the Dinosaurs (2003) |
|
aka: |

Credits: |
|
Synopsis:
For anyone who’s ever watched a movie so
bad you wished acting required a permit or that a 14-day waiting
period was mandatory to buy a camera…Sgt. Elke Mantooth and Lt.
Drucilla Dread seek out the worst "cine-terrorists"" in movie history
and bring them to justice for your entertainment. The first Bad Movie
Police case is a little gem from 1992 called Galaxy of the Dinosaurs.
Its claim to fame is director Lance Randas’ gross misuse of stock
footage from Planet of the Dinosaurs, intercut with thrift store
footage shot in the woods behind the director’s father’s house!

| Before We Ruled the
Earth - Mastering the Beasts |
|
aka: |
|
Credits: |
|
Synopsis:
15,000 years ago, the Cro-Magnons had
evolved to become the sole residents of Europe. They had all the
abilities of modern humans: the power of speech, reasoning skills, and
a belief in the afterlife. But it was still a struggle to survive in a
land where large dangerous carnivores competed for living space. As
the humans spread out across the world, they made their way over an
ancient land bridge connecting Asia and the Americas: Beringia. Life
inthe tundra was treacherous, and three stranded women had to use
their ingenuity, skill, and sheer guts to survive emong the Woolly
Mammoths on which they depended for survival. Moving to North America,
the so-called Paleo-Indians developed even more sophisticated weapons
and their ability to communicate. They flourished among the waning
megafauna like the Giant Ground Sloth. Hunting reached its climax on
the Great Plains of North America when two small bands of Paleo-Indians
came together for a ritual buffalo hunt, driving hundreds of buffalo
off a cliff in a massive slaughter. Early human's ability to adapt is
what pushed them to the four corners of the earth and beyond, Before
We Ruled The Earth.

Synopsis:
Long before humans appeared on the planet,
dinosaurs ruled the earth. On a little off-coast island, a clan of
lemurs finds a dinosaur egg, hatching. Since there are no parents, the
lemurs take care of the newborn, Aladar. Years later, a medium meteor
goes down close to the island and the shockwave forces its inhabitants
to flee to the continent. There, Aladar and his family meet other
dinosaurs for the first time as well as real dangers. The destruction
caused by the meteor here has also forced a herd of different
herbivores to move to a remote valley that can provide food and
protection against the carnivorous predators following after. Since
Aladar grew up with a different understanding of the ways of the
world, his way of helping others first isn't accepted within the herd,
but soon it is proven that reason may be better than panic. Summary

Synopsis:
In 1922 American paleontologist Roy
Chapman Andrews led an archeological expedition into Mongolia's Gobi
Desert and uncovered one of the richest dinosaur graveyards in the
world. Political conflicts forced him to leave before he had even
scratched the surface of the treasure below. In 1997, two
paleontologists from the American Museum of Natural History were
finally allowed to return, retracing Chapman's steps and unearthing
some groundbreaking finds of their own. With spectacular on-location
filming, archival footage from Chapman's expedition and impressive
computer animation, it's an amazing journey back in time to a lost
world where ancient giants once roamed.

| Discoveries Argentina,
Dinosaurs (2001) |
| Credits: |
|
Synopsis:
This "bare bones" title takes the viewer
on a journey to the Argentinean badlands of Patagonia wher Drs.
Rudolfo Coria, Jorge Calvo, Rachael Rao, Luis Chiappe, and Carlos
Munoz share startling discoveries. At Aca Mahuida, teams found the
plains littered with fossilized egg shells, which further exploration
revealed to be the world's largest known dinosaur nesting ground.
Here, scientists not only discovered fossilized embryos enabling them
to identify thedinosaurs as Titanosauruses, they also were able to
learn more about the dinosaur skin, growth patterns and mating habits.
Other sites featured here include Rincon de los Sauces, La Buitrera,
and El Chacon, where paleontologists have stumbled upon a highway of
dinosaur footprints and the skelton of Gigantosaurus, the largest
carnivore presently known (an estimated 145 feet in length). At the
various dig sites, paleontologists explain how these
80-million-year-old clues are combined to create a pre-historic
portrait of the mighty lizards. While the graphics are not as flashy
as you'd find in the Walking With Dinosaurs titles, the excellent
content combined with the opportunity to witness up close on-site
exploration more than compensates (not to mention the fact that very
few other titles focus on the international dig sites). Extra features
include "The Tiniest Giants" exhibit tour by Dr. Luis Chiappe at the
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in California, where he
discusses the findings at the Aca Mahuida nesting grounds.

| Synopsis: Young
John McGowan travels to Scotland to live at his grandfather's castle
after he loses his parents in a traffic accident. At the wishing tree
he conjures up a dragon friend, Yowler. They grow up together, and one
day documentary film maker Bob Armstrong and his daughter Beth stumble
upon Yowler. Hungry for fame (and money), Bob convinces John to "rent"
Yowler to local unscrupulous businessman Lester McIntyre. John is
convinced in part by the offer to have the outstanding taxes on the
castle paid off, partly because of his growing interest in Beth.
Yowler is miserable in the new theme park built for him, and when it
becomes clear that McIntyre has tricked them in order to exploit the
dragon, John and his new friends take action. |

Synopsis:
A volcanic eruption in the North
Atlantic brings to the surface a 65-foot pre historic monster. Two
treasure divers capture the creature and take him to London where he
is put on display in a circus (usually not a good idea). A scientist
is thoughtful enough to point out that the sailor's bonanza is only an
infant and that a full grown specimen would be over 200 feet in
height. Sure enough, Gorgo's mama comes thundering ashore, reclaims
her offspring and heads back to sea -- but not before she trashes a
generous portion of London. The special effects in Gorgo, provided by
Tom Howard -- two time Academy Award winner, are truly admirable. The
monster is quite ferocious - except when he wiggles his ears |

Synopsis:
Taking the title from the novel by Jules
Verne, this story takes his basic premise of the desire to travel to
the center of the Earth. This is where the similarty ends, the story
becomes more like Edgar Rice Burrough's "At the Earth's Core," when
the travellers using their craft penetrate an active volcano and
encounter a strange world filled with many creatures and an evil force
controlling it all. The 2 hour television movie might have been a
pilot for a series, based on the closing dialog as the central
characters realize they are stuck down there and they speculate about
what adventures might lie ahead. Summary written by Dennis Kytasaari |

| Prehistoric America |
|
aka: |
|
Credits: |
Synopsis:
Functioning as a natural-history time
machine, Prehistoric America follows the successful example of the
BBC's previous documentary series Walking with Dinosaurs, employing
digital imagery to explore North America's distant past. Each
50-minute episode focuses on a specific region of the continent: the
northern "Land of the Mammoth" once known as Beringia (including the
Canadian Yukon and Alaska); the southwestern "Canyonlands," including
what is now Las Vegas; the "Ice Age Oasis" of Florida; and the "Edge
of the Ice" in the Pacific Northwest. Bones and fossils are revived by
the magic of CGI, illuminating the lives and behaviors of mammoths,
mastodons, sabre-toothed cats, and other unusual wildlife that
flourished in these regions 14,000 years ago, just as humans were
making their first footprints on the continent. While the CGI
creatures become slightly redundant and fall short of Hollywood
quality, they're still convincing enough to transport viewers into a
richly informative and visually captivating journey to the end of
Earth's final Ice Age. Matching the high standards of all BBC
documentaries, Prehistoric America builds a digital bridge to this
most remarkable epoch, never compromising its fascinating scientific
inquiry. --Jeff Shannon
Description: Prehistoric America takes us on a
journey through the prehistory of North America - beginning 14,000
years ago when people were first entering this vast and beautiful
continent. Witness ancient beasts, mammoths, mastodons, giant bears
and sabre-toothed cats, and see how their successors - modern animals
and beasts - carry on their legacy.

| Walking with Dinosaurs
(1999) |
|
aka: |
| Credits: |
|
Synopsis:
Learn all about the dinosaurs and how they ate, fought,
mated, and more. High-tech animatronics and computer graphics are used
to bring the world of the dinosaurs to life, in this popular
documentary series. Includes six episodes featuring the most
up-to-date discoveries, narrated by Kenneth Branagh. Made in
association with The Discovery Channel. |
Dinosaurs may
be extinct, but they still rule the world. When the first episode of
the six-part BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs originally aired, an
estimated one out of every four Britons tuned in. What they witnessed
was dinosaurs brought to life, not in the modern world as in Jurassic
Park, but in their original habitats millions of years ago. Revived
using computer-generated effects that cost close to $5 million and
sophisticated animatronic models, the dinosaurs look barely a day over
150 million years old. The creators present the series in classic
nature-documentary style, complete with an authoritative narrator
(Kenneth Branagh) to guide the viewer through the footage of dinosaurs
mating, fighting, raising their young, grazing, or, in the case of
carnivores, hunting. Each episode focuses on a theme, whether it is a
particular era, such as the Mesozoic, or a particular type of
dinosaur, like those that ruled the oceans. Each part also focuses in
on the life of an individual dinosaur or family of dinosaurs. The
result is a series of short dramas that both inform and entertain.
The show is so realistic that some scientists and viewers have
criticized its seamless blending of fact and speculation. Those who
wish to maintain a healthy skepticism about the theories set forth
should watch the exclusive footage from The Making of Walking with
Dinosaurs included on the DVD and available via mail-in on the VHS. In
it, the scientists freely admit that some educated guesswork was
involved and explain how they arrived at the dinosaurs' appearances
and behavior. Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with every
detail of the re-creation, it is difficult to deny that Walking with
Dinosaurs succeeds in providing dinosaur lovers with an experience
that can't be matched by mere images of paleontologists and fossils.
There's an extra 15 minutes of footage on the video that wasn't
broadcast on TV, much of it dinosaurs attacking each other. With the
violence, plus explanations of mating, cannibalism, and other
terrifying things, young kids should skip it. Dinosaur enthusiasts of
age 6 and up should be fine; it's far less violent than anything from
the Jurassic Park films. --Eugene Wei --This text refers to an out of
print or unavailable edition of this title. |

Synopsis:
This nature documentary uses animation and
hours of researched facts to attempt to recreate the age between the
extinction of the dinosaurs and the dawn of the modern human. Among
the most intriguing creatures are giant flightless birds, the
saber-toothed tiger and the many predecessors to human beings. An
incredible document of beasts generally passed over in evolutionary
studies with amazing animation. |

| Walking with Cavemen
(2003) |
|
Credits: |
|
Synopsis:
Breaking the mold of previous "Walking
with" offerings, the BBC's Walking with Cavemen sees Professor Robert
Winston follow in the footsteps of ancient man in a series that traces
the history of humanity from bipedal ape-men (Australopithecus
Aphaeresis) to the awakening of the human mind's potential with Homo
Erectus. Over four fascinating half-hour installments, Wilson presents
an accessible and populist, but still suitably anthropological study
on how apes became human and the traits that we inherited from our
earliest ancestors.
Unlike Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Beasts, Cavemen
combines CGI with actors to portray the characters in the story of
man. Initially this seems to make it far less technically impressive
than the earlier programs--memories of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 are
inevitable--but fortunately the acting is superb and the viewer soon
forgets that these are people in monkey suits. The series also makes
use of a special effect called "deep time-lapse", which shows in a
matter of dramatic seconds the thousands of years of geological
changes that sped up our ancestors' evolution. Wilson himself takes
part in the action as if he is a modern-day naturalist following lions
across the Serengeti rather than creatures long extinct. This approach
makes for a more immediate as well as poignant interpretation of
history: the result is an enlightening and moving tribute to the human
journey. --Kristen Bowditch
Description: How did our ancestors come to invent language, to shape
the world with tools, to create art, and to imagine the future? The
award-winning team behind Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with
Prehistoric Beasts brings you this missing link in the story of life
on our planet. Follow your family tree all the way back -- to
Australopithicus afarensis, the first of our primate ancestors to
stand on two legs. See the first sparks of reason as early humans
learn to adapt in an ever-changing world. Trace the evolution of such
basic human traits as compassion, friendship and love. Watch as we
bury our dead for the first time. Then make your way to ice-age
Europe, with the Neanderthals who fight to hang on to their domination
of the planet...but are forced to concede it to Homo Sapiens. |

Synopsis:
Imagine a world overrun by 9-foot
flightless birds, 17-foot giant beavers and predatory marsupial lions
as tall as elephants! Two million years ago, these enormous creatures
- Mega Beasts - roamed the continents in bursting populations. Despite
the fact that each gargantuan species is now extinct, the mystery of
their demise lives on. Watch the most rivetingly realistic computer
animation available as What Killed the Mega Beasts? takes you on a
fascinating journey through time. Now you too can attempt to solve one
of the greatest riddles ever, one that to this day keeps scientist
from Patagonia to Colorado to New Zealand debating and searching for
answers. Join us as we explore these questions: Is it the "Chill
Theory," which argues that profound climactic change accounts for the
death of the Mega Beasts? Is it the fact that big animals adapt to
environmental changes less easily than do smaller ones? What if a
"killer virus" swept away these extraordinary, fearsome beings? Or,
finally, as those who ascribe to the "Kill Theory" assert, is it
possible that the Mega Beasts were slaughtered by a creature more
terrifying than any other - man?

| When Dinosaurs Ruled -
5 Pack (2000) |
| Credits: |
Synopsis:
When Dinosaurs Ruled uses enhanced 3-D
animation to present lithe, agile dinosaurs that look more like a
nature program than science fiction. This Learning Channel series
incorporates all the latest research into warm-bloodedness, skin
coloration, kinetics, and social behaviors, not to mention newly
discovered dinosaurs. The information is presented with helpful
charts, graphs, and visuals and in language that is easy to understand
but not at all dumbed down. The soundtrack, excellent pacing,
cinematography, and animation are bonuses.
The five-part series devotes an episode apiece to dinosaurs found in
Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and
Australia/Antarctica. The exclusion of Asia is one of the series' few
shortcomings. The DVD's special features include direct scene access
where you can jump between thematic sections, a trivia quiz to see how
well you remember the information presented, and spotlighted dinosaurs
where you can jump between the specific dinosaurs presented in each
episode. Although the visuals in the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs are
more impressive, these are still quite spectacular. In addition, there
is so much new and different material presented here that any
dinosaur-enthusiast's collection should include both. Expert or
novice, kid or grownup, these DVDs will appeal to anyone interested in
learning more about what the earth was like When Dinosaurs Ruled.
