Synopsis:
There were times when stealing girls in
these lands has been a worthy vocation. Only the strongest and most
experienced men took the profession up. Such a lad was Banko, the main
character in the movie. His latest kidnapping is a success in the
beginning, but the girl, Elitza, reveals a "manly" character. She
fights against being taken to the weak-willed, stupid groom, who
believes that money can buy him everything. Ultimately Banko and
Elitza fall in love. This leads to the most dramatic and tragic events
in their lives. |

Synopsis: 13th Century explorer Marco Polo (Diamont) and
his kid brother (Saumier) travel east in search of their father,
getting into episodic adventures, eventually culminating in a showdown
with an Armenian warlord (Palance). This low-budget flick isn't meant
to be taken as historically authentic, explaining why there are so
many blonde, fair skinned characters in the Middle East, and why Polo
keeps getting into street brawls that seem left over from director
Erschbamer's usual beat of straight-to-video action flicks (American
actor Diamont even looks like frequent Erschbamer star, Lorenzo
Lamas). Intended, presumably, as a kind of "Hercules: The Legendary
Journeys" swashbuckler, but the scenes are bland, with little
successful humour, and it's flatly directed with too many weak
performances. Palance, though, is a usual stand out, and Reed (as a
camel merchant) and Anvar (as Polo's sidekick Youssef) are O.K. Anvar
and Saumier are the only Canadians in the main cast. Kids might find
it more fun, though even then, Erschbamer lets his penchant for
gratuitous violence creep in occasionally, making it inappropriate for
littler kids. The movie may have been intended as the first of a
series that never occurred (since Polo sets out to find his father and
reach China...and has achieved neither by the end, and Palance's
villain escapes). by: THE GREAT CANADIAN GUIDE

Summary written by {fargalaxy. When the intrepid
Venetian traveller Marco Polo first recorded his adventure something
was missing - for the heart of his story lay burled deep within the
soul of the man himself. In the famous chronicle of his travels
nothing is revealed about Marco's experiences in Israel and the Middle
East - the tale of an impossible love and his destructive passion for
a bold and beautiful woman. It was this story of jealousy, lust and
compassion that Marco would reveal to inmates in his Genoan prision
between bouts of torture by the Inquisition and under threat of
certain death. |

Polo: Queen of the Seas, The (1995) |
|
Credits: Director – Roger Hart — Producer – Sam Grana
|
|
Synopsis: Is a video, produced by The National Film Board
of Canada, telling the story of the famous ship Marco Polo built in
Saint John, New Brunswick by James Smith. December 26, 1852. I
witnessed the making of a legend. My name is Charles and I'm with the
Illustrated London News. The Marco Polo has just circumnavigated the
globe in less than six months! She is the Queen of the Seas. A new age
of travel has begun! From a shipyard in Saint John, New Brunswick, to
Liverpool and Melbourne and, finally, to a watery grave off the coast
of Prince Edward Island, The Marco Polo: Queen of the Seas offers a
fascinating account of a legendary ship during the golden age of sail
in the 19th century. Although it began life as a freighter carrying
timber from Canada to England, the Canadian-built Marco Polo was soon
bought by new owners who recognized the potential of her huge size and
revolutionary design. Outfitted for passenger travel, the ship
transported thousands of emigrants to the promise of a new life in
Australia. Today, one in every twenty Australians can trace his or her
roots to the Marco Polo. Using archival footage and dramatizations of
journals kept during the ship's voyages, this documentary presents a
colourful cast of characters, including the dictatorial but widely-
respected captain who was determined that no ship would sail faster.
It is also the story of some of the thousands of poor emigrants whose
personal anecdotes are a vivid reminder of the challenges that
confronted ocean travellers during the 1800s. Through the voices of
those who built her, sailed her, and a written account by Lucy Maud
Montgomery of her ignominious end, The Marco Polo chronicles an
unforgettable journey through time and place. Legendary in life and
death, the spirit of the Marco Polo lives on today in festival and
song in both Canada and Australia. Local community leaders in Saint
John have ambitious plans to build a replica of the ship. if they
succeed, the Marco Polo may soon sail |

Synopsis:
The incredible life and spiritual evolution of the shepherd Tanas are
seen against the background of the revolutionary struggle in
turn-of-century Macedonia. In the beginning the inner world of the
protagonist is governed solely by the laws of nature and the age-old
patriarchal order. All of a sudden he enlists in a revolutionary band
and lives through the exaltation accompanying the outbreak of the
Uprising of St Elijah's Day (1903) and the tragedy of its defeat. His
mind undergoes a complex metamorphosis - from the darkness of
primitive existence to a historically - conscious way of thinking.
Along with the character of Tanas the film features a host of
mythological creatures organically integrated into fabric of the
story. |

Synopsis:
In 1412, a young girl called Jeanne is
born in Domrémy, France. The times are hard: The Hunderd Years war
with England has been going on since 1337, English knights and
soldiers roam the country. Jeanne develops into a very religious
young woman, she confesses several times a day. At the age of 13,
she has her first vision and finds a sword. When coming home with
it, she finds the English leveling her home town. Years after that,
in 1428, she knows her mission is to be ridding France of the
English and so sets out to meet Charles, the Dauphin. In his
desperate military situation, he welcomes all help and gives the
maiden a chance to prove her divine mission. After the successful
liberation of Orléans and Reims, the Dauphin can be crowned
traditionally in the cathedral of Reims - and does not need her
anymore, since his wishes are satisfied. Jeanne d'Arc gets set up in
his trap and is imprisoned by the Burgundians. In a trial against
her under English law, she can't be forced to tell about her divine
visions she has had continuously since childhood. Being condemned of
witchcraft and being considered as relapsed heretic, she is
sentenced to death. Jeanne d'Arc is burnt alive in the marketplace
of Rouen on May 30th, 1431, at only 19 years of age. Summary written

Synopsis:
This
handsomely-mounted historical epic concerns the birth of
the Islamic faith and the story of the prophet Mohammed --
who, in accordance with the tenants of Islam, is never
seen or heard (any physical depiction of the prophet is
considered a heinous sin within the faith). In Mecca in
the 7th century, Mohammed is visited by a vision of the
Angel Gabriel, who urges him to lead the people of Mecca
to cast aside the 300 idols of Kaaba and instead worship the one true
God. |

| Synopsis: "Mikres
Aphrodites" (Young Aphrodites) was made in 1963. The film was directed
by Koundouros. It is set in ancient Greece, about 200 B.C. The movie
focuses on a wandering band of shepards. They happen into a small
village where there do not happn to be any men because they are away
fishing. Two romances follow. Two of the shepards (a man and boy) fall
in love with a oman and girl from the village. Many of the actors were
acually sheepherders. The film is based on the fable of Daphnis and
Chloe. The film won the Berlin Film Festival, and the International
Film Critics Award. There is an English narative.
|
|
Tragic tale of a young
shepherd's disastrous attempt to find affection from an older village
girl with whom he has fallen in love. As she mimics what she has seen
adults doing, the boy catches her making love to another youth. As a
result, the shepherd commits suicide. This abrupt and violent ending
seems hard to swallow in an otherwise gentle film. |

successful and brings about a golden age among them. Mendoza, a
slaver, kills his brother in a fit of rage, and only Fr. Gabriel's
guidance prevents his suicide. Gabriel brings Mendoza to work at his
mission with the natives, and Mendoza finds peace and asks to become a
priest. The church , under pressure, cedes the land to the Portuguese
which will allow slavers in again. Mendoza breaks his vows and
organizes the natives to resist while Gabriel warns him to help them
as a priest. Summary written by John Vogel |

Synopsis:
In June of 1791, a group of passengers in a stagecoach find themselves
caught up in the events of the French Revolution, when they find
themselves in the city of Varennes when revolutionists arrest the
fleeing King Louis.
Summary written by frankfob, On 20 June 1791 the
king and queen of France (Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette) tried to
escape from Revolutionary Paris to join monarchist allies outside
France, but were arrested in the town of Varennes. The incident
inflamed popular distrust and hatred against the monarchy. Linked to
this historical event the film imagines a group of travellers on the
same road, including the American patriot Thomas Paine, the noted
seducer Casanova, the French novelist Restif de La Bretonne, and one
of the queen's ladies-in-waiting. They reflect various attitudes
toward the momentous changes taking place around them. Summary by
