Lady Godiva
(1921) |
|
Credits: regia di Hubert Moest || Cast: Ernst Deutsch, Hedda
Vernon, Eduard von Winterstein, Toni Zimmerer |
|
Synopsis: For an actress, to do a nude scene in the 1920s
was unthinkable. This almost guaranteed that controversy would
surround the picturization of Tennyson's poem. But Godiva's naked ride
in this German-made film was tame stuff, and what was left was an
overlong costume drama with limited appeal. The plot, however, did
stay close to the poem, except that it gave more importance to the
court jester. In England's feudal times, Leofic, an evil earl, forces
the beautiful Godiva (Hedda Vernon) to marry him -- no matter that she
is already promised to architect John Dryer, who has been working on
the Earl's castle. Because Godiva refuses to do her wifely duty, the
earl cruelly mistreats her. He also demands the capture of Dryer and
orders that all the homes in the village will be burned if he is not
returned in two hours. Godiva offers to perform any sacrifice to
prevent the people's suffering and the earl orders her to ride naked
in the streets. Dryer returns and is about to be executed when the
castle tumbles down, killing everyone in it. Godiva is saved because
she was warned to leave by the court jester and she reunites with
Dryer. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide |

Synopsis:
Released not long before a much more spectacular Cleopatra came
along to make Elizabeth Taylor even more famous, this routine drama by
Vittorio Cottafavi, a director who favors historical epics, is no
competition. The prelude to Cleopatra's demise is the main focus of
attention, but in this drama Mark Antony's presence is usurped by the
Roman envoy Curridius (Ettore Manni). Curridius travels all the way
from Rome to warn Antony that the powers-that-be are not thrilled with
his behavior. Along the way, he faces one danger after another and
then encounters Cleopatra (Linda Cristal) to make it all seem worth
the effort. Gladiators in combat, underwater fights, and other
impressive action scenes enliven the story. |

Synopsis:
An exploration of the life of Leonardo da
Vinci. from Utrecht, the Netherlands.
This is a documentary of the kind the BBC (or British tv) is rightly
praised: knowledge combined with drama. The series depicts the life of
Leonardo from early boyhood to his death (and even after). And for
once, Leonardo is not shown as the old man with a beard as we all seem
to know him. After all, even Leonardo must have been young. We see
him, travelling through Italy, fighting against sometimes mighty
opponents and against ignorance. Although the acting is bordering on
the dramatic at times, the overall atmosphere is very good, giving you
a true feeling of a society rising from the middle ages.
The dramatic scenes are interwoven with academic commentary. What's
more, in each of the three 60-minute parts the crew tries to recreate
and/or analyse one of Leonardo's marvels. Why are his drawings and
paintings so special? Would his underwater-suit have worked? Or his
tank, or his hang-glider?
This is one of those documentaries of which one can only hope it will
appear on dvd. In the meantime, you might want to check out the BBC
web site dedicated to the series. by Author: Roelof Ruules |

Synopsis: A Historicallly accurate story animated in this
brilliant dvd, educating, fun and entertaining. Taking you back in
history to the 13th century, this remarkable true story recounts the
saga of one man and one nation that overcame staggering odds to
render a permanent mark both in the history of the world and the

notorious Mongol warriors threatened the peaceful Muslim Empire.
Amidst the menacing threat, a legend that came to be known as
Seifuddin Qutoz was born. Royal at birth, he was captured in route
to safe harbor from the brutal Mongols. From the shackles of
slavery, Qutoz emerged as ommander of the Muslim army that
confronted the advancing Mongol warriors. The story culminates with
the legendary battle in the Palestinian city of Ain Jaloot in 1260
AD. The Muslim's bold defeat of Hulego Khan (heir to Genghis Khan)
ultimately protected the Holy City of Jerusalem from their savage
pillaging. As commander of the army that freed the world from the
grip of terror that reigned in the land, it was the show of
strength, bravery and faith that earned Qutoz the title "Lion of Ain
Jallot. This stunningly animated emotionally charge movie is a DVD

Synopsis:
Based on Jean Cocteau's modern-dress
adaptation of the Tristan and Isolde legend.
Film inspired on the life of Vasco Núñez
de Balboa. Frank Latimore is cast as Balboa, the heroic Spanish
explorer who discovers the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, he must
pacify the wrath of his enemies and battle his way through a forest
inhabited by savage natives. This one features some really nice
battles, stunning ocean photography, and tolerable reconstruction of
historic events. The romance between the Balboa and the Indian queen
is of course fake, but adds to the drama and spectacle of it all. |
