Synopsis:
Saint Roman Church Versus The Progress!,
After his encounter with Giordano Bruno in 1592, Galileo convinces
himself that the sun, and not the earth, is at the center of
universe. The Church considers Galileo's theory a heresy, but he
continues his studies in Florence, until he's arrested and tried.
Standing before the inquisition court in 1633, he will sign a solemn
abjuration. Galileo Galilei and the Church: a controversial and hard
subject faced by Liliana Cavani in this TV movie (which was later
screened in movie theaters), which portrays Galileo's drama when he
opposed himself to a conservative and obscurantist church. Cavani
focuses on the contrasts, and powerfully proposes his story with
dramatic intensity. Author: ANTONIO LA TORRE (BCULT) |

Synopsis:
This bio-pic is about Galileo, the 17th
century Italian who laid the foundations of modern science. Galileo
made himself one of the world's first telescopes and discovered the
moons of Jupiter. He supported Copernicus' theory that the Earth
revolved around the Sun. This brought him in conflict with the
Catholic Church. By threatening him with torture, the Church forced
him to recant his views in front of a tribunal, and sentenced him to
house arrest. However, Galileo's trials and theories inspired others
like Newton and Kepler to prove that the Earth was not the centre of
the Universe. Some years ago, the Pope accepted that Earth does
revolve around the Sun and issued a rare apology for what the Church
had done to Galileo, i.e., the Catholic Church recanted! |

Synopsis:
An impressive central performance from
Topol distinguishes this otherwise fairly leaden adaptation of
Bertolt Brecht's 1947 play, which explores the trials of the
17th-century Italian mathematician and astronomer whose theories
brought him into confrontation with the Church. Director Losey felt
a close personal connection to the material following years of exile
from the USA after the McCarthy witch-hunts. |

Synopsis:
The biography of Mahatma Gandhi, who rose
from a small-time lawyer to India's spiritual leader through his
philosophy of non-violent but direct-action protest. Sir Richard
Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture,
Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing,
reverential look at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced
the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of
India and who ultimately gained the nation its independence.
Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the course of
the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international
leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between
India and Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its
formative stages here) as well as character and ideas, this is a
fine film. --Tom Keogh |

Synopsis:
This colorful if somewhat truncated biopic
of the legendary Mongol leader was filmed in the Philippines. Manuel
Conde (the film's producer) stars as Temujin, the peasant later to
be known as Genghis Khan. In rapid-fire order, Temujin fights a
rival tribe over the rights to water hole, avenges the murder of his
father, and claims the heroine (Elvira Reyes). Originally filmed in
the Tagalog language, Genghis Khan was released in the US with a
narration spoken by film critic/screenwriter James Agee. This
all-but-forgotten film bears the distinction of receiving two
reviews in the trade paper Variety; The first time for its
Philippine debut, in 1952, and the second time for its American
distribution by United Artists in 1953. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie

Genghis Khan (1998) |

Synopsis:
The film is set in the 12th century. Yasugai of the
Mongolian Qiyan Clan kidnaps He'erlun from the Mie'erpi Tribe and
makes the woman his wife--who soon, in the chaos of wars between
tribes, gives birth to Tiemuzhen. A Tartar assists in delivering the
boy. That same Tartar later colludes with Talihutai of Qiyan: his
wife, Bo'ertie, is abducted by the Mie'erpi people in revenge of
Tesugai's early kidnapping of He'erlun. Risking his mother's life by
using her as a hhostage, Tiemuzhen maneuvers an attack on Mie'erpi and
rescues Bo'ertie. However, she is found already pregnant. In an
extreme agony and confusion, Tiemuzhen kills the head man of the
tartar, who has come to assail, to avenge his father. In the
battlefield, He'erlun tells her son that the Tartar with goshawk
tattoos on his arms is who delivered him onto this world. In such
drastic shock, Tiemuzhen suddenly strikes his enlightenment. With
remarkable tolerance and clemency, he accepts Bo'ertie and her baby,
decides to overlook his personal hatred and clan hostility and to
terminate the wars with a final fight. A history of a thousand years
of killings between clans is therefore ended and the prairie of
Mongolia becomes a unity in peace. Tiemuzhen is then recognized as
"Genghis Khan".

Synopsis:
Middle Ages. Bulgaria is under the Ottoman Empire. Somewhere, far in
the mountains, goatherd Karaivan lives with his wife and little
daughter. One day, while he is away, Turks burst into the house and
rape the woman before the eyes of the kid. She dies and the girl is
shocked into growing dumb. From this moment on, Karaivan is obsessed
with the sole thought of taking revenge. He moves with the girl into a
cave high in the mountains, raises the girl as if she is a boy, trains
her to fight and draw a bow. Deep in her heart, the girl has no
hatred, but a craving for love. She meets a young Muslim shepherd and
falls in love. The father is unable to swallow it and kills the young
man, thus killing his own daughter. |

Synopsis:
This
Bulgarian tragedy is a remake of that country's most popular film of
all time. Unlike the sharply political original, this version centers
more on the human relationships involved in the story of a humble
Christian shepherd and his small family during the Ottoman rule. The
sad story begins as the shepherd's beautiful wife is brutally ravished
by two wandering Turks. While he and his daughter helplessly look on,
the two pierce the wife's throat with a curly goat horn and leave her
to die. Father and daughter, Maria, are utterly horrified; the
daughter is so traumatized that she becomes mute, and more than a
little insane. The father too, goes mad with grief. He takes Maria to
a huge cave deep in the mountains where he hacks off her hair, dresses
her in sheepskins and teaches her to kill without flinching. It is she
who goes out to exact revenge on the two who murdered her mother. They
die as she did and are found with goat horns sticking from their
throats. Back at the cave, life becomes more difficult when Maria
blossoms into a beautiful young woman and her father begins to develop
sexual feelings for her. Though he resists his lustful urges, he
cannot help but become insanely jealous when she falls in love with a
lonely Muslim shepherd. |

| Guimba the Tyrant
(1995) |
| Credits:
Directed by Cheick Oumar Sissoko |
|
Synopsis:
Winner of the Swissair/Crossair Special
Prize from the Locarno International Film Festival and the Ouagadougou
Panafrican Film and Television Festival's Grand Prize. The story of
Guimba, the cruel tyrant who is feared by all. It is probably not a
coincidence that this mythical dictator, Guimba, resembles the real
dictator, Moussa Traore, who was overthrown in 1991, ending a reign of
terror which the people of Mali are unlikely to forget. The films'
director, Cheick Oumar Sissoko was involved in the underground
movement against Moussa Traore. Told in a traditional African
narrative style, this film is considered to be one of the most
important African films of the decade. "...a riotously colorful,
irreverent satire on the ways of tyrants.." Roger Ebert, Chicago
Sun-Times. "Dazzles the senses. the epic scale and historical sweep
set Guimba in a class by itself among African films."..Deborah Young,
Variety. |
