Director: Henry King |
| Synopsis:
A young and impetuous nobleman in 16th
Century Spain helps to free a slave who belongs to Diego De Silva,
but this proves to be a mistake, as Diego is one of the leaders of
the Inquisition. Diego soon brands Pedro a heretic, puts his family
behind bars, and subjects his little sister to torture so horrible
it kills her. An outraged Pedro plots his escape, with the help of
his friend Juan Garcia and hot-blooded peasant girl, Catana Perez.
Pedro and his friends help his parents make their way out of Spain,
and he soon joins forces with Hernando Cortez, who has an ambitious
plan to sail to the new world in search of gold. However, a vengeful
Diego uses his powers to foil Cortez, and when Diego is murdered,
Pedro becomes the key suspect in the crime.

Synopsis:
Pauline Kael wrote: "It is a day in 1616;
a Spanish regiment comes to a town in occupied Flanders. The
cowardly burghers hide, but their charming ladies meet the
challenge, and in the morning the Spaniards depart, poorer in
worldly goods, richer in experience." -Altamente recomedable. Fue la
pelicula elegida en aquel memorable programa de "La Clave", para
ilustrar el debate sobre el Imperio Español y los Paises Bajos |
Jacques Feyder's joyfully
immoral satire, La Kermesse héroïque (Carnival in Flanders), was
greeted with acclaim and controversy on its original release -
acclaim at international film festivals where it scooped top prizes,
and controversy in Belgium where it caused small riots: some
protested about the mocking portrait of Flemish notables whilst
others saw in it allusions to the Flemish collaborators during the
Germans' occupation of the area during World War I. Some even called
it "Nazi-inspired".
This tongue-in-cheek farce - an early feminist screen comedy - is
set in the early 1600s in a Flemish town which is facing invasion by
the Spanish army. The men of the town are spineless and the mayor
pretends to be dead, but his rather more courageous and
sophisticated wife (played by Feyder's own wife Françoise Rosay)
takes control of the situation and by recognising and appealing to
the enemy's base needs, she and the town's women avert certain
catastrophe.
Feyder succeeds in balancing witty farce and intimate character
comedy in lush settings through which he aimed to bring to life the
work of such Flemish masters as Vermeer, Hals, Memling and both
Brueghels. Art Director Lazare Meerson's recreations of the Flemish
town, architecturally precise and scrupulously detailed, and
beautiful photography by Harry Stradling combine to make an
unforgettable impact.

Synopsis: Bernard Borderie hit the big time in France
during the sixties with his "Angélique marquise des anges" (there were
no less than five movies!). But his star, Michèle Mercier wanted to
call it a day -and it was the downfall of her career- and Borderie had
to find another heroine and another star. The heroine was Catherine ,a
young maid from the end of the Middle Ages, roughly Joan of Arc times
.The star was Olga Georges-Picot who starred in Resnais's "je t'aime
je t'aime" and who sadly committed suicide in 1997,age 53.This movie
was intended to be the first of a series : thus, the ending will not
satisfy the audience ,because it calls for more. The movie was neither
a commercial nor an artistic success and Borderie gave up making a
sequel.People who like the Angélique saga might be interested though.

Synopsis:
In 1271, five young knights journey to
Thebes in Greece to recover the Sacred Shroud and deliver it back to
France and into the hands of the royal family. |
|
Screenwriter: Pupi Avati (The Best Man;
cowriter of The House with the Windows that Laugh, many others)
Based Upon: Though the Shroud of Turin's recorded history only goes
back to the 14th century (source: Britannica.com), this movie tells a
possible story of how it might have made its way to France in the 11th
century (from there it eventually ended up in Italy). As far as I can
tell, Simon of Clarendon is a fictional character.
Premise: Simon of Clarendon (Furlong), a young knight of 11th century
France finds himself with the duty of retrieving the holy relic, the
Sacred Shroud from Thebes, Greece, when he returns to France with news
of the Shroud only to discover that the King has died. Accompanied by
four other young knights, Simon journeys across medieval Europe on a
Holy quest.
Filming: Production started on this movie on April 3rd, 2000 with
locations including Scotland, Italy, France, and Tunisia, with a
budget of $15-18 million. |

Synopsis:
Young Charles is placed on the Frankish
throne in the middle of the 8th Century A.D. Despite having many
powerful enemies he slowly unites the nations of Western Europe and
rebuilds civilization on the ruins of the Roman Empire.
Summary written by Dragan Antulov
|
|
From his father Pippin,
Charlemagne inherits the northern part of the Frankish kingdom and
Aquitaine, where Duke Hubold is rebelling. In his first victory,
Charlemagne defeats the conspirator. At the same time Charlemagne's
brother Karlmann is poisoned. For reasons of state, Charlemagne
marries the daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards, and soon
falls in love with her. He has to disown her, however, when Desiderius
attacks Pope Hadrian and the the Papal States. After a siege of Pavia,
the Lombard king is defeated by Charlemagne. Soon he rules an empire
stretching from the Atlantic to Rome. He finds new happiness in the
arms of the Frankish woman Hildegard. But Charlemagne's enemies have
not been idle: Paschali, the influential nephew of Pope Hadrian,
tricks him into going to Spain to fight the Saracens. Experienced
general that he is, Charlemagne recognizes the trap; he avoids doing
battle and returns home. His best friend Roland is killed, however,
when their encampment is attacked by Basques. His wife Hildegard also
dies while giving birth to their child. His faith in God now deeply
shaken, Charlemagne starts questioning the sense behind his battles,
but at this point an English monk introduces him to the teachings of
Saint Augustine, and this gives Charlemagne new strength. Meanwhile
the heathen Saxons in Germany, under the leadership of Duke Widukind,
are taking up Charlemagne's full attention. A war ensues, during which
thousands of Saxons are killed. But then Charlemagne befriends
Widukind, who converts to the Christian faith. Now Charlemagne has to
deal with the attempts at independence being undertaken by Duke
Tassilo of Bavaria, who had originally sworn allegiance to the Franks.
He has him accused and exiled. Charlemagne now has to return to his
court as quickly as possible, where his former friend Ganelon has
installed his disowned son Pippin the Hunchback on the throne as a
mock king. Charlemagne defeats his son and his small retinue with
ease. Shortly afterwards he hears that Pope Hadrian has died. The new
pope, Leo, seeks refuge with Charlemagne from his opponents who are
eager to pass sentence on him for declaring his opposition to an
alliance with Byzantium. Charlemagne recognizes the new pope and
travels to Rome. By means of a clever trick he manages to prevent the
Byzantines from carrying out their plan to come to Rome as well. On
Christmas Day in the year 800, in gratitude for his support, Pope Leo
crowns Charlemagne emperor. |

Synopsis:
Spectacular as its barbaric passions and
savage conquests. In ancient times, the Mongolian warlord Temujin must

Eventually, Bortai falls to his manly charms, Temujin defeats his

Synopsis:
Film inspired on the life of Vasco Núñez
de Balboa. Frank Latimore is cast as Balboa, the heroic Spanish
explorer who discovers the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, he must
pacify the wrath of his enemies and battle his way through a forest
inhabited by savage natives. This one features some really nice
battles, stunning ocean photography, and tolerable reconstruction of
historic events. The romance between the Balboa and the Indian queen
is of course fake, but adds to the drama and spectacle of it all. |

Synopsis:
A crown, supposedly made from a nail out
of the Cross of Christ and the metal of Roman swords, becomes a
legend and a symbol of justice. The hero follows a stag through the
woods on his quest, tames lions, escapes all danger, and wins the
female leader of the slaves. Compounding poor production and stiff
acting is that the English subtitles are not contrasted against the
background, making reading them difficult if not impossible at
times. Then too, many shots, including some with subtitles, do not
stay on the screen long enough to register. Production does not
contrast well with DeMille epics nor Massimo Girotti's acting with
that of Johnny Weissmuller, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., or Errol Flynn.
On the plus side, there are some very interesting scenes involving
differences in tournament jousting -- much different that what we
have seen in English mythology films. Best left in the can.
|
| Between classical
mythology and Hollywood hankerings, the film tells the story of a
boy repudiated by his own land, his growth and his redemption.

17th century Britain is a
hotbed of revolution, treachery, and court intrigue. And standing in
the center of this tumultuous storm is Cromwell. Richard Harris stars
in this dazzling historical epic as Oliver Cromwell, the fiery,
ambitious commoner who took on the monarchy and almost single handedly
changed the course of Western Civilization. Alec Guinness lends his
formidable presence as the enigmatic and forceful King Charles I. The
clash of these two great figures is fought in castle corridors, on the
floor of Parliament, and finally in a rousing battle between their two
armies. One man will become absolute ruler - the other will be
executed. Featuring strong performances and gripping battle sequences,
Cromwell's England comes alive in this historic tail of power and

Synopsis:
Towards the end of the eleventh century,
Pope Urban II announces a crusade against the Saracens, who have
occupied the holy city of Jerusalem. Three young friends # Richard,
Peter and Andrew # set off to join the crusading army. The three
friends come from very different backgrounds: Andrew is a shepherd;
Peter is a poor bell founder, and the illegitimate son of a Christian
woman and a Saracen man; and Richard is the deeply religious son of
Baron William of Aurocastro, who was murdered by his rival brother
Corrado. The violent methods used by the crusaders soon cause the
three friends to fall out with each other, and after a bloody attack
on a Jewish monastery, they go their separate ways: Andrew remains
with the crusaders, while Peter and Richard accompany the attractive
Jewess Rachel # whose teacher, a rabbi, was killed in the raid # to
Jerusalem. Andrew is very reluctant to see Rachel go, having # like
Peter # fallen in love with her at first sight. In Jerusalem the
situation is very tense: the Saracen governor is having the Christians
expelled from the city, out of fear of crusader spies. Peter, Richard
and Rachel manage to trick their way into the city, but shortly
afterwards Richard is arrested. When the crusaders, with Andrew at
their head, arrive at the gates of Jerusalem, the former friends now
face each other as enemies # because to save Richard, Peter has joined
the side of the Saracens. The city cannot withstand the onslaught of
the crusaders and their fierce fighting spirit, and soon falls into
