Synopsis:
This uneven production intends to outline
Spanish Muslim history - from the 8th century to the expulsion of
Arabs and Jews in 1492. Although the Islamic monuments in Spain, the
history of Andalus and the landscape of Spain are dramatically
presented - often excessively so - choppy editing, egregious errors of
details and mispronunciations mar the overall work. Frerk for

Synopsis:
The life history
of the renowned poet Abu al Tayyeb al Mutanabbi. |
(Kufa,
Iraq 915- Baghdad 965) Arab poet, considered the greatest
of the classical Arab poets. al-Mutanabbi was educated in
Damascus, as well as choosing to live among bedouins in
the desert, with the tribe Banu Qalb. It was during his
youth that he got his name, which means "the one who wants
to become Prophet", when he participated in revolutionary
movements.
During imprisonment he started to compose his poetry. From
948 to 957 al-Mutanabbi worked close to the Syrian prince
Sayfu d-Dawla in Aleppo, and wrote a number of panegyrics
for him. But as al-Mutanabbi was still political active,
he was eventually forced to flee to Egypt, but as he wrote
satires that presented the court in a negative way, he had
to move again, now back to Iraq, to Baghdad.
Later on he worked as a court poet in Shiraz. While being
without a patron, al-Mutanabbi was in 965 slain by
brigands during a trip, near Baghdad.
With a flowery style, use of the ode, and changing away
from the traditional Arabic qasida, al-Mutanabbi stands
out as the most important representative for the
panegyrical poetic style.
From a poem written to Sayfu d-Dawla, we can read this
PASSAGE FROM POEM BY AL-MUTANABBI
Glory and honour were healed when
you were healed, and your pain passed on to your enemies.
Light, that had left the sun, as if it was sick in its
body, came back to it. By race, the Arabs are supreme in
the world, but a foreigner will take part with the Arabs
of good heart. |

Synopsis: A 15th-century lawyer defends a pig put on trial
for murder. n medieval France, young lawyer Richard Courtois leaves
Paris for the simpler life in the country. However, he is soon drawn
into amorous and political intrigues. At the same time, he is pushed
to defend a pig, owned by the mysterious gypsy Samira. The pig has
been arrested for the murder of a young boy. Summary written by Reid
Gagle.
Set in 15th century France. A Parisian lawyer wearies of the cynical
sophistication of the capital and solicits appointment as the public
defender in a remote, rural province. He finds himself expected to
defend a pig in a murder trial. (As the public prosector says,
"Anyone who knows animals knows there are good ones and bad ones.")
What initially appears to be a case based on simple rural
superstition turns out to conceal a far worse corruption. Eventually
the lawyer returns to the capital, having learned that cynical
sophistication is not so easily evaded. Summary written by Fred
Hapgood |

The film AMOK deals with the apartheid
system in South Africa. It sheds light on the terror, misery, theft,
drug addiction, and violent death common under apartheid. AMOK, a
liberal adaptation of Alan Patton's American novel, Cry the Beloved
Country, is provoking and successful in rendering the ferocity of
reality. It is also an expression of rebellion in a racist regime. A
movie which sincerely defends and advocates that there is a "spark of
peace" in every human being capable of changing reality. This film,
the first shot entirely in black Africa on the subject of apartheid.

| Anna and
the King of Siam (1946) |
|
aka: |
| Credits:
Directed by: John Cromwell. Writing
credits: Sally Benson (I) + Talbot Jennings. |
|
Synopsis:
Anna Owens and King Mongkut were real
people, this is basically a true story. Both this film, the play on
which it was based, and the fabulous musical "The King And I"
(haven't seen the new cartoon version) are very similar versions of
the same story. They suffer from some of the same flaws: White men
in yellowface as the king, a weak story (always a danger with
reality), and an unmitigated dose of racist colonial arrogance, but
in "The King and I" the flaws are mitigated by fabulous performances
and some terrific musical numbers. |
| In 1862, young English
widow Anna Owens accepts the job of teaching the royal children of
Siam. On her arrival in Bangkok, culture clash is immediate. The
king respects Anna for standing up to him, though this appalls his
courtiers. In due course, she becomes the king's confidant and
diplomatic advisor; their relationship endures through many trials.

Synopsis:
Happy families are all alike; every
unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. This famous line commences
a refreshingly modern interpretation of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna
Karenina-—an epic tale of love, duty, marriage and infidelity. This
richly detailed film charts the tragic romantic triangle formed when
the dashing Count Vronsky defies social conventions and falls into
forbidden love with Anna, the ignored wife of an aristocrat. Soon,
Anna’s children—a son by Alexei and illegitimate daughter by Vronsky—become
pawns in Alexei’s game to see that Anna pays a terrible price for
her indiscretion. With its gripping narrative and unbridled romance,
Anna Karenina reveals the uncontrollable passion, emotional betrayal
and courage of a woman who violates moral strictures and risks
everything to follow her heart. Helen McCrory stars as Anna, along
with Kevin McKidd (Trainspotting) as Count Vronsky, the handsome
object of her desires; and Tony Award-winner Stephen Dillane (The
Real Thing) as Alexei Karenin, Anna’s callously principled husband.

Anne of the Thousand
Days (1969) |
|
Credits: Director
: Charles Jarrott Star: Richard Burton, Genevieve Bujold,
Anthony Quayle, Irene Papas |
|
Synopsis: Middle
Ages (1066 to 1450 AD), Richard Burton as King Henry and Genevieve
Bujold as Anne Boleyn in this emotionally charged drama about one of
history's most famous tragic love affair. Anne of the Thousand Days is
the belated film adaptation of Maxwell Anderson's 1948 stage play. The
story concentrates on the romance between Britain's King Henry VIII
(Richard Burton) and his ill-fated second wife Anne Boleyn (Genevieve
Bujold). After holding out for marriage rather than an illegitimate
union, Anne marries Henry after he sheds himself of Katherine of
Aragon — causing a rift between the Crown and the Church in the
process. Anne's inability to produce a male heir leads Henry to look
about for other suitable mates. Henry's sinister right-hand man
Cromwell (John Colicos) arranges for Anne to be condemned on a charge
of adultery. She is beheaded, while Henry disconsolately sits in
Windsor Castle, regretting this callous example of political
expediency. Richard Burton is ideally cast in Anne of the Thousand
Days, but it is Genevieve Bujold who delivers the best, most complex
performance in the film. |

being a Shepard after his father banishes him for beating
the arrogant nobles of the tribe, Antar starts talking to
the slaves about having their freedom and there is no
difference between a black man or a white man, slave and
master. later The tribe gets attacked by furious invaders
when they know that Antar is banished and will not go back
to fight for his people anymore. when Antar knows about
the invaders he feels satisfied and wishes that his people
would be slaves so they know how it feels to be like him,
but when he hears Abla calling for his help he forgets how
bad his people treated him and starts fighting the
invaders driving them away from the tribe. Antar is freed
from slavery for his good deeds and his father admits him
as his rightful son and heir in front of all the people of
the tribe, and once again is promised again to marry Abla,
but his uncle still refuses to give him his daughter and
he sets up a scheme that forbids the marriage between
Antar and his Cousin Abla. Antar gets devastated and
leaves the tribe. A war breaks between Persia and
the Arab, Antar fights to gain the freedom of all slaves. |

| Augustus |
|
aka: |
| Credits:
Director: Roger Young |
|
Synopsis:
Augustus is equal parts history lesson and
soap opera, and thoroughly engaging at all levels. Peter O'Toole plays
Octavius/Augustus, heir to his doomed uncle Julius Caesar's command of
the far-flung Roman empire. Surviving an assassination attempt and
struck by news of the death of his old friend and ally, Agrippa (Ken
Duken), in the same day, Octavius waxes nostalgic about his youthful
exploits in Caesar's army (Benjamin Sadler plays the young Augustus in
flashbacks) and his unprepared immersion in the deadly politics of the
Mark Antony (Massimo Ghini) era. More immediate are Octavius' problems
trying to stave off conspiracies by his wife Livia (Charlotte Rampling)
to set up the emperor's stepson, Tiberius (Michele Bevilacqua), as
heir, and talk his dutiful daughter Julia (Vittoria Belvedere) into a
marriage she doesn't want. Roger Young (Jesus) directs this highly
watchable costume drama, and O'Toole's golden presence makes the
ancient intrigues tragically human. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis: In
651 C.E. Khan Kubrat died and the Khazars accelerated their raids upon
Great Bulgaria. His five sons split the Bulgarian tribe and each led
his to find new land where they could live in peace. Khan Asparukh,
the youngest son, went west and, after an arduous journey lasting for
years, southward across the River Danube, into Moesia. In 680-81, in
alliance with the Slavs, he inflicted tunning defeats on the Roman
legions and forced the Byzantine Empire to recognize the formation of
the new state of Bulgaria in the lands where it still exists today.
A spectacular epic, "Khan Asparukh" was made to celebrate the 1,300th
anniversary of the founding of Bulgaria. This edited version
compresses the three-part film from almost 6 hours to 95 minutes.
Sumptuously filmed, with over 50,000 extras, the film narrates the
history of these momentous events, from the fall of Great Bulgaria in
the Asian steppes, through Asparukh's perilous trek west, and the
decisive battles with the Byzantines. The original film was seen by
over 11 million Bulgarians, a stunning feat for a population of less
than 8 million! |
