| Synopsis: In the peace following the founding of the Round Table, the knights have become lazy. The Green Knight magically appears and challenges anyone to cut off his head, asking only that he have the same opportunity on his opponent. Only young Gawain, a squire, takes up the challenge. The Green Knight replaces his own head when it is cut off and gives Gawain a year to learn the meaning of life. Gawain has many adventures. He kills the Black Knight, whose wife swears revenge. When he arrives at her castle in the lost land of Lyonesse, beautiful Linnet gives him a ring for invisibility. When attacked, the ring transports him a wasteland. He returns to Lyonesse to find a dead city. He brings Linnet back to life, but evil Baron Fortinbras and his sadistic son Oswald capture her. Gawain tries to rescue her, but she apparently dies in a fire. He becomes ill and is taken in by a kindly knight and finds Linnet alive. He defeats Fortinbras. He faces the Green Knight, who spares his life. He now realizes he is a full-grown man. |

But instead, she goes off with another, causing the usurper to proclaim that she has died and that he is now the rightful king. Fortunately, she is not dead but off in the country seeking Merlin. She and her lover succeed and with the mighty magician manage to return to Camelot just as the new king is to be crowned. At this point the crusty Merlin demands that the Saxon prove his fitness to reign by removing Arthur's beloved Excalibur from its scabbard. He fails, and the good princess succeeds. Immediately, the usurper and his band flee the country, but not before they are vanquished by the newly united British army. |
