| The Desert Hawk
(1944) |
|
Credits: Frank
Lackteen, Mona Maris,
Gilbert Roland, Director:
B. Reeves
“Breezy” Easton |
|
Synopsis:
This 15-chapter Columbia serial.
Kasim (Gilbert Roland), the Caliph of Abad, is kidnapped
by his evil identical twin, Hasson (also Roland). Kasim
escapes from his captors and returns to the capital, where
his brother now rules in his name. To regain the throne,
Kasim assumes the identity of The Desert Hawk, battling
Hasson’s evil henchman Fuad (Frank Lackteen) and romancing
Hasson's bride-to-be, Princess Azala (Mona Maris).
In a rare, and probably unintentional bit of casting, one
of the Arab villains really is of Middle Eastern
background. Lackteen, a Lebanese-American, was a familiar
villain in serials, particularly westerns. In fact, all
these actors drifted in from Columbia’s westerns,
including the California deserts, doubling for North
Africa or Arabia (wherever Abad is supposed to be). |

| The Desert Hawk (1950)
VHS |
| Credits:
Yvonne
de Carlo, Richard Greene, Director:
Frederick de Cordova,
Written by Gerald Drayson Adams |
| Synopsis:
stars Yvonne de Carlo as Princess Scheherazade and
Richard Greene as Omar. By day a humble blacksmith, the Desert
Hawk spends his evenings battling against the oppressive regime of
Prince Murad. One of the Hawk's tactics is to trick Scheherazade
into marriage, so that he can enlist the aid of the army commanded
by the Princess' father. Murad retaliates by kidnapping Shararazade,
leading to an exciting climactic rescue. In a
mythical, medieval North Africa (looking a lot like California) a
Bedouin chief named Tamerlane (Jeff Chandler) is seeking to capture
the magnificent wild stallion Shazada when he meets tomboyish Princess
Tanya of Tunis (Maureen O’Hara). When the two meet again in Tunis,
Tamerlane has run afoul of the barbaric Corsair Lords, one of whom
Tanya's wicked cousin is forcing her to marry. To avoid this dire
fate, Tanya must arrange for a dark horse to win the forthcoming great
race. Meanwhile, she and Tamerlane are increasingly attracted to one
another. |

on hold after the producers' coffers dried up and somewhere along the
line Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were pencilled into the movie and
now the movie's fate is shrouded in mystery. With even Rahman making
ambiguous statements about his commitment to the movie, for all

Synopsis:
Adapted from Tezuka's own manga
adaptations of the Arabian Nights, 1001 NIGHTS is a sumptuous and
erotic retelling of this classic tale. Aladdin the water seller
rescues the beautiful Miriam from the slave market and from the
clutches of the depraved son of the chief of police. They fall in love
and spend a night of passion, but Alladdin is soon framed and
imprisoned for a murder he did not commit. Miriam gives birth to
Aladdin's child but dies soon after. The child, Yahliz grows up and
falls in love with a shepherd boy Aslan. Aladdin escapes from jail and
eventually returns to Baghdad where he becomes king with the
manipulative Badhli as his vizier. Bahdli fakes Aslan's death and
persuades Yahliz to join the king's harem. Alladdin is only saved in
the nick of time from committing incest with his unknown daughter. A
fantastic tale of intrigue, passion and human dysfunction. |
|
A story of a poor water
seller in Baghdad who stumbles his way through ali baba and his 40
thieves, the tower of Babel, sinbad the sailor, the island of the
sirens and many others stories that either i didn't recognise from the
1001 nights stories or were just made up by the animation team on one
of what must have been many acid binges. The film was made in 1969
with a crew of about 15 animators and others (the same names pop up in
multiple roles) and is thus forced to employ a number of techniques to
cheapen the animation, using still frames incorporating live action
shots (for such hard to animate things as the ocean) and shooting live
action footage of miniature models for the landscape shots. Despite
this there is a great deal of skill in the animation, especially in
the number of things the morph into other things. Some scenes in this
film are intensely erotic blending abstract and direct representations
of sex scenes and orgies. The abstract sex scenes was some of the
weirdest animation i've ever scene, essentially an undulating mass of
pink springing forth the occasional phallus or feminine curve. It is
interesting that although this movie does not conform to the styles
and convention of Japanese anime there is visible in some characters
prototypes of what would become staple anime genre identities. The
mecha/ monster, the naive Kawaii girl, the gritty needs-no-man woman.
However all in all this film is totally totally one hundred percent
wacky. If a festival near you has got its hands on the only surviving
print in the world, take advantage of the opportunity, go see it and
take a tape recorder in with you and record the soundtrack, some
classic psychedelic sixties music is attached to this movie. |

Where Do We Go From Here?
(1945) |
| Credits:
Directed by Gregory
Ratoff. Written by Morris Ryskind, from a story by Sig Herzig. Fred
MacMurray |
Synopsis:
History buff Bill (Fred MacMurray) is
barred from regular military service during WW II by a medical
condition, but he seeks to help as best he can. One day he is
scrubbing up an old lamp that had been donated for the scrap metal
drive and out pops a genie (Gene Sheldon). The poor fellow has been in
the lamp so long that his skills are little unreliable. When Bill asks
him to send him back to the American Revolution so he can fight under
George Washington, the genie messes up and sends him to Christopher
Columbus. As the genie tries to return his master to the proper era,
Bill is zapped into different historically important times. Every
place Bill ends up, he finds himself pursued by the same two women
(June Haver and Joan Leslie).
This is a peculiar film in that the only element it borrows from the
Arabian fantasy is that of the genie. |
