| THE MIGHTY GORGA (1969) | dir: David L. Hewitt; w/ Anthony Eisely, Megan Timothy, Scott Brady. No skin; no gore. · · · In search of a "big" new attraction for his failing circus, our hero journeys to deepest Africa and discovers an isolated plateau filled with prehistoric toys, erm, I mean dinosaurs. Finally, he meets Gorga, who turns out to be just the director wearing a really goofy-looking gorilla suit. But the real star of this flick is certainly the most pathetic dinosaur anyone has ever had the gall to put on screen. Their Tyrannosaurus Rex looks just like they bought it off the shelf at a dime store and is photographed with all the convincing artistry of a second-grader with a hand-cranked 8mm. The split-screen shot where Eisely is "threatened" by the creature & its flapping plastic jaw has to be a finalist for the single worst special fx shot in cinema history. Fortunately, the hilarity isn't limited to the ridiculous special effects. The characters, dialogue, and plot logic are so atrociously clumsy and clichéd that this flick delivers more good belly laughs than most deliberate comedies. I love the shot where they reach the top of the plateau -- they've scaled the cliff for hours -- the air is getting thin -- and as they haul themselves over the top -- the camera angle clearly shows that they're only eight feet off the ground. In terms of mind-boggling stupidity, it rivals Reptilicus and Giant Claw. What a hoot. | |||
